III. Reading Comprehension(40%)

Passage 1

Who says people need land to grow vegetables? All you need is a roof that is strong enough, and flat enough, to support a garden. Here is one way to build a rooftop garden without soil. Four things are needed to follow this design: a roof, grass cuttings, a sheet of plastic and a box about 8 cm deep and made out of four pieces of wood. Once you are sure the roof is good, cut and collect some grass. Place the box on the top of the sheet of plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Next, add water and walk on the cuttings to press them down. After about three weeks, the rooftop garden is ready for growing beans, peas, tomatoes, etc. Put the seeds directly into the wet grass cuttings. Water every day to keep the grass wet until the plants begin to grow and keep growing. The plants will also need some liquid fertilizer which you can make yourself: collect chicken waste in a cloth bag and put the bag in a container of water. After about one week, the water becomes a good liquid fertilizer. Rooftop gardens are increasingly popular, and not just to grow vegetables. They keep buildings cooler in the sun, so they save energy. They also reduce the runoff of storm water and help clean the air. Plus they add nice places for birds and insects in the city.

Passage 1

Only special plants can survive the terrible climate of a desert, for these are regions where the soil temperature throughout the year can be over 75. Furthermore, during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun’s rays. Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds that drive small, sharp sands into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however, is the fact that each year the entire amount of rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring. Grasses and flowers in a desert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot, dry season in the form of seeds. These seeds remain inactive unless the right amount of rain falls. If no rain falls, or if there is not enough rainfall, they wait until the next year, or even still the next. Some plants have special elements that enable them to survive as long as several years. Nearly all of them have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in a short time. The small shoot system, on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation (蒸发).

3What effect will strong winds have on the desert plants?

AThey drive sands into the plants and damage them.

BThey make the soil temperature very high.

CThey bring out most difficult problem in the region.

DThey protect plants from being flooded.

4What is true about the shoot system of the plants that can survive several years?

AThe shoot system alone can survive as long as several years.

BThe shoot system decides the appearance of those plants in a desert.

CThe shoot system is small and can considerably limits water loss.

DThe shoot system may lose the amount of water the root systems absorb.

5What is true about the root system of the plants that can survive several years in desert?

ARoot systems help plants get water for many years long.

CRoot systems can increase water loss below ground.

DRoot systems help plants enjoy the sunshine.

Passage 2

GE Rui, a computer technology major at college, gave up a train ticket he had tried hard for volunteer work at a community learning center. The volunteer program was started by Microsoft (China) and Plan China, an international non-governmental organization to give basic computer training to migrant workers (农民工). James Murray, a man in his 50s, is the country director of Plan China. “You get greater satisfaction working to help the needy in developing countries,’’ said Murray when he met GE Rui last Tuesday at the community learning center. What does Ge have to offer? Well, for one thing, a loving heart, and effort to work in one of the computer training programs. “I thought a volunteer was someone like Norman Bethune, who came to serve in a developing country for nothing,” Ge said after meeting with Mr. Murray and other members. People working in NGOs come from different academic backgrounds and most of the staff are Chinese and fresh graduates. Yu Na, 21 for example, graduated from the Huaiyin Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 2006. She began as a volunteer and joined the program last September. Passage 3

More tips should be kept in mind when considering your teen’s driving. For example, if you’re buying a car for your teen, try to find one with a high safety rating. It can help keep your auto insurance premiums (保费) down, and increase road safety. Also, if you believe the Graduated Driver Licensing laws (GDL) in your state aren’t strong enough, here are some suggested rules you might want to use with your teen: •Discuss when, where, how, and with whom your teen is allowed to drive. •Limit the number of passengers in the car. Laughter, music, and cell phones can create serious distractions (分心) which increase with every additional passenger. •Insist that your driver (and all passengers) wear seat belts at all times. They may not be cool, but seatbelts save lives. (And, in some states, it’s the law.) •Create a no-cell zone. Talking on the phone is a dangerous distraction on the road for drivers of any age. Know the applicable laws in your county or state, as these are changing rapidly and fines can be heavy. •Consider limiting your teen’s driving privileges(特权) during accident high-risk times (such as Friday and Saturday nights). •Set driving-area limits. If your teen wants to travel outside your town or city, require that he or she request your special permission. •Prohibit driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Prohibit riding as a passenger with a driver who’s unfit to drive.

11When considering buying a car for their teen, parents are advised to _________.

Apay more attention to the insurance premiums

Bpay more attention to the road safety rules

Cpay more attention to the car’s safety rating

Dpay more attention to the tips in their mind

12Wearing seat belts at all times _______.

Aregulated by the law in every state of the USA

Bis regulated by the law in some parts of the USA

Ccan make a driver look fashionable

Dcan protect teens from all road accidents

13What is not true about the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws?

ASome other rules should be set to replace the GDL laws.

BThe GDL laws in some states might be regarded as a little weak.

CThe GDL laws are different from state to state.

DIt is good to set more detailed rules based on the GDL laws.

14Why should teens limit the number of passengers in their car?

ABecause the more passengers using cell phones, the louder the voice.

BBecause teens sing and laugh more often when the car is crowded.

CBecause the more passengers in the car, the more laughter and music.

DBecause the more passengers in the car, the more distractions they create.

15The last 3 rules are concerned about___________.

Awhen, where, and with whom your teen is allowed to drive

Bwhen, where and how your teen is allowed to drive

Climitation of your teen’s driving privileges

Dprohibition of drugs, alcohol or unfit passengers
